Can we use globe valves like gate valves? (Part One)

Valves such as globe valves, gate valves, butterfly valves, check valves and ball valves are all indispensable control components in various piping systems. Each valve is different in appearance, structure and even functional purpose. However, the globe valve and the gate valve have some similarities in appearance, and they both have the function of cutting off the fluid in the pipeline. Therefore, many people who don’t know much about valves will be confuse about the two valves. In fact, if you look carefully, the differences between globe valves and gate valves are quite big. Xinhai valve company will make you know more about globe valves and gates valves in this article.

Structures
Paying attention to limited installation space
Gate valves can be tightly closed with the seal surface relying on the medium press so as not to leak. When the gate valve is opened, the valve spool and the valve seat’s sealing surface are always in contact and rubbing each other, resulting in the easy wear of the sealing surface. When the gate valve is nearly closed, the pressure difference is great at the pipe’s front and behind, making the wear of the sealing surface more serious. Gate valves are more complex in structures than those of globe valves. From the appearance, gate valves are taller than globe valves and globe valves are longer than gate valves with the same diameter. In addition, gate valves can be categorized into rising stem gate valves and non rising stem gate valves. Globe valves can’t be classified into either of them.

Working principles
Globe valves are opened or closed with a rising stem, which means the handwheel rotates and lifts with the valve stem. Gate valves are opened or closed by turning the handwheel, so that the valve stem goes up or down. However, the position of the handwheel remain unchanged.

Their flows are different. Gate valves require full opening or full closing, while globe valves do not. There are specific inflow and outflow directions for globe valves, but gates valves doesn’t have such direction requirements. In addition, gate valves only have fully opening or closing two states and the opening and closing stroke of the disc is great with long opening and closing time. The movement stroke of the globe valve’s disc is smaller than that of the gate valve, also the disc of the globe valve can be stopped in the movement for flow regulation. Gate valves can only be used for cutting off the fluid. There is no any other function.

Performance differences
Globe valves can be used for either cutting off or adjusting the fluid. The fluid resistance of the globe valve is great, so it is not easy to open or close the globe valve. The distance between the disc of the globe valve and its sealing surface is short, resulting in short opening and closing stroke. Gate valves can only be fully opened or closed. When they are fully opened, the flow resistance of the medium in the valve is nearly zero. Therefore, it is easy to open or close the gate valve. The distance between the gate valve’s disc and its sealing surface is far, resulting in long opening and closing time.
